Mason Selected To Lead Fundraising and Alumni Affairs
Benjamin F. Mason, former Executive Director of the Baltimore City Chamber of Commerce has been appointed to the position of Assistant to President For Institutional Advancement at S-DC.
Mason brings a wealth of experience and successes to the new position. He is credited with helping the city reach a $59 million dollar budget surplus while serving with the chamber and under his leadership, the city chamber's membership increased by over 300% during a two year span.
Mason said of his new position, My responsibilities here at Sojourner-Douglass primarily require me to increase internal and external fundraising and to boost alumni participation here at the College. I am confident that we will soon begin to realize greater results in both of these areas.
Dr. Charles w. Simmons, the S-DC President, said, I am well aware of Ben's talents in the area of fundraising and helping people to understand the value of giving to an academic institution. I was pleased when he accepted the position. His record throughout the city is one of accomplishment.
Mason has spent over 30 years in both the private and public sector, including positions as a member of the State Board of Higher Education. He held the position of vice-president at a biomedical laboratory corporation, managing the firms day-to-day operations. Sales increased by 40% during Mason's tenure.
Earlier in his career, Mason's positions afforded him the opportunity to help hundreds of minority owned businesses. The assistance he gave these companies gives Mason the distinction of being a pioneer in the field of affirmative action.
The former army lieutenant holds an undergraduate degree in chemistry from Morgan State University, and an MBA from American University.
