The FIRST step that you need to complete is applying to Sojourner-Douglass College. Once you apply for general admission to the College, you will need to take the College placement test in order to assess which courses you will take. If you are transferring credits in, you will need to have your transcripts sent to the Registrar’s office for evaluation.
The courses that you will need to take prior to being considered for the Practical Nursing program depend on which level that you test in at on the College Placement test. If you test at certain levels that are below College level, you will be required to take developmental courses which are geared toward helping you take the Nursing pre-entry exam and receiving a passing score.
If you test at College Level, are not transferring in courses, and are applying for the Cohorts scheduled to start in March 2008 and July 2008, you will need to take the following courses the semester before you are considering entering the program, and complete them with a grade of a ‘C’ or better:

Upon acceptance into the program, and starting your nursing courses, the program is a 3-semester program.
Yes, you are required to take the pre-nursing entrance exam as part of your application to the program. You will take this exam during the semester before the one that you are applying for. This means that you will have needed to or be in the process of completing your required prerequisites before you can sit for the exam. The exam costs $50.00 which you will be required to pay by way of cash or money order prior to scheduling the exam in the nursing office. The exam itself takes about 3 hours and is administered online. Testing dates for each cohort are posted in the LPN Program Calendar.
You will need to fill out an application in the Nursing Office the semester before you plan to start nursing courses. You will also need to submit a 500 word essay discussing why you want to be a nurse. Additionally, you will need to schedule an interview with nursing faculty around the same time that you take the pre-entry exam.
You will take the nursing pre-entry exam mid-way through the semester prior to the one when you plan on starting your nursing courses.

Acceptance letters are sent after all of the applications are completed. Typically, you will receive your letter approximately 1 month before the date of the start of the nursing program. You will need to complete all of the required health clearances, drug screen, and criminal background check prior to the start of the nursing program.
If you a felony record, you will NOT be accepted into the program. If you have misdemeanor(s) you can still be considered for the program.
Nursing courses are taught during the day. Nursing clinicals are taught between 7:00 a.m. and 11:00 p.m. and may be scheduled any day of the week around the clinical site availability.
